About

Once upon a time…
linuxNUS started off on 6 July 2005 as a simple Yahoo! Group. The main intention was to form a community of Linux users in the National University of Singapore (NUS) who would be able to help and support each other, much like Linux User Group Singapore (LUGS) does for Singapore.

As the group grew, the Core Team was formed and the proposal was submitted to the NUS Office of Student Affairs (OSA). On 7 October, linuxNUS was officially approved as an official Students’ Interest Group.

So who are we…
linuxNUS’ members are mainly students in NUS who are either actively using Linux or are interested in doing so. There are also some members on the mailing list who are simply interested in learning more. Whatever the case, we welcome everybody! =)

Our vision..
To nurture a cohesive and vibrant community of Linux and open source users within NUS.

Objectives for Academic Year 2006/2007..
To increase the membership of linuxNUS and to instil a sense of belonging and camaraderie among members.

Some terms of reference associated with us:

linuxNUS: lowercase “L” in front. Not uppercase. This is name of our club. To the school administration, we are officially the “NUS Students’ Linux User Group”. Our club currently has the status of a Students’ Interest Group.

linuxNUS.org: our main site, the one you are looking at right now Again no caps here.

Linux: as in the kernel by Linus Torvalds. A proper noun with caps in front.

open source: two words here. Caps when speaking about the movement at large (eg. Linux and Open Source software) and no caps when speaking generally (eg. Apache is an open source project)

Opensource@NUS: this seems to go against the point directly above, but that’s what we’ve come to call it, and it just looks better this way =) This site could also be refered to as the “NUS Open Source Wiki”. The wiki is a project of linuxNUS that aims to provide technical documentation for users of open source software in NUS. Examples include tips, HowTos and FAQs.
