Sun held it’s Open Source Day at COM1 on Friday, as part of the Sun Technology Outreach programme.
On the kind invite of organisers, Wee Yeh and Neng Giin, linuxNUS set up a booth at the event to showcase Fedora 8 (along with Compiz Fusion goodies =). Thanks to Eugene, we also had nice printed Fedora DVDs to hand out to the crowd that dropped by our booth.
Our showcase comprised mainly of Compiz-Fusion demos, productivity suites (Microsoft Office-on-WINE and OpenOffice.org), and the nifty virtualisation of Nexenta within the recently Sun-acquiredInnotek VirtualBox. And indeed, while the audience had their productivity (and compatibility!) doubts resolved, and admired the flexibility of running an OS-within-an-OS, we have to say honestly, that the Compiz-Fusion demos were the star of the show.
We need to thank the organisers of the Sun NUS Open Source Day for inviting linuxNUS to set up a booth there, for it gave us quite a bit of publicity. And I’m not kidding when I say people have come up to me after watching the demos at the booth saying that they’ve fallen in love with Linux. Really! It’s true!
And if you’re one of those who came by our booth to say hi on Friday and pick up a Fedora DVD, here are a few links to get you started (if you haven’t found your way around already =)

Have you always wanted to know more about Open Source and Linux? Learn about the philosophies of the Open Source world. What makes Open Source software better?
Can you do the same things you do on Windows and Mac in Linux? Can you do them better? What about compatibility? Will you still be able to share files with your Windows and Mac using friends? What about assignments?
We’ll also teach you a few nifty tricks that you can use to make life in NUS that much easier =)

It’s a new academic year again, and linuxNUS is organising a Welcome Tea for freshmen to find out more about who we are and what we do! This will take place on 22 Aug 2007 (Wed) at 1830hrs in COM 1 / 207.
The purpose of this session is to formally introduce you to our Coreteam members as well as get to know each other better. We will also announce the array of exciting events that we have lined up for you in the coming months. Light refreshments will be provided.
Take this opportunity to get to know members of the Linux and Open Source community here in NUS, and learn about the important role Open Source software plays in this era. Many entrepreneurs have introduced innovative products with Linux and FOSS as a platform for development. ZopIM, one of the budding startups at the E27 Garag3 will also be present at the Welcome Tea. Learn how Open Source software has enabled them to quickly develop and deploy their application.
We will be giving out more Ubuntu installer CDs, on a first-come-first-served basis. If you need any assistance pertaining to Linux, we will be on hand to answer any questions you may have (i.e. wireless connectivity issues, etc).
If you would like to attend, please drop us an email at contact@linuxnus.org with your name and contact number. This is so that we know how many people are coming and provide for enough refreshments. Also, if you want an Ubuntu CD, let us know as well so we can reserve one for you!
We look forward to meeting everyone at the Welcome Tea.
Matric fair rocked! linuxNUS was down for 4 days at booth #55 from 30th July to 2nd Aug. This is the 1st time that linuxNUS participated in the fair since we just started off not too long ago.
We have arrived!
It was pretty successful despite the initial difficulties that we had. But in the end, we manage to overcome the malfunctioning hardware and setup up a PIII 800 Mhz, 367 MB ram, Nvidia 128MB ram that showcased KDE and compiz-fusion.
The spinning cube desktop!
Don’t you agree?
Yup! That’s how lean the machine is… who says Linux has to be boring? =)
Luqman loving the fire paint plugin
It was quite interesting that some of the freshies were unable to find our booth. Because somebody actually thought that we are “Leading Innovation in NUS” (aka Linus). Lolz. Nevertheless, many freshies did stumble upon our booth despite the little hiccup =)
Leading Innovation in NUS…
We got a total of 75 signups at our booth. One would probably think that all these would be either from Computing or Computer Engineering. Surprise! Some of the more “unexpected” aculties/departments/schools include:
FASS: Philosophy, Psychology
School of design and environment: Architecture
CFA
Science, Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Mathematics, Chemistry
Business
FOE: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
Wow! You mean this is not Windows or Mac OS?!
Well we are firming up details of our coming activities. So stay tune to our site and mailing list for further updates on our activities. If you missed out on our booth at the fair, do check out the rest of the photos taken.
It seems that the ever increasing popularity of Firefox web browser has caught the attention of Center for Instructional Technology (CIT). As such, CIT has designed the next rollout of Integrated Virtual Learning Environment (IVLE) Version 8 to support Firefox, in addition to Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE).
CIT has collaborated with linuxNUS to recruit testers for functional testing of IVLE 8 in non MSIE browsers.
Testing will be carried out in 2 “phases”:
1. Bug Day #1: Everyone come together to do testing, ask questions etc
While (Time Permits)
2. Self - service testing day: Testers go back and test on their own remotely.
Each will be allocated a different section to test. After testing, users clock in their time spent and bugs found
3. Break: Testers take a break while developers do the necessary code changes to fix the bugs
Loop
The “Bug Day” will take place at Computer Centre PC Cluster, Computer Centre Building Level 3 on 24th May 2007, 10am to 5pm. The pay Rate: $7 per hour. Remote testing is at $6 per hour.
linuxNUS is proud to be part of this effort to support Firefox compatibility in IVLE 8.
It’s the second week of the new NUS semester, so HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! The coreteam has planned several events this semester, most of which are still in a planning stage. Just to pique your interest, here’s a sneak preview:
T-shirt: linuxNUS will have our own T-Shirt!!
XAMPP Introduction: Ever heard of XAMPP by apache friends? It’s a pre-packaged [Linux/Windows]AMP stack to install in your own computer!! It is not for use in production environments, but for developers to have a web server immediately. That way, they can get on with the thing they want to do: develop software. And we can wait for the fruits of their efforts. :p
Security Talk: We are inviting Eugene Teo to come down for a security talk. Likely topic is System Tap, and virtualization. He should be telling us about Linux Conference Australia 2007 too. Wohoo!
FOSS Awareness Talk for business students/startups: Capital issues plague startups all the time. NES and linuxNUS will be working together to introduce FOSS as a money saving alternative.
Career Networking Session: There are plans to hold one of these, but everything is still preliminary at this point.
Okay, enough about events for now. Do you know linuxNUS have our own cappuccino machine? Yup, you read it right! Rey and Junhao are still polishing their barista skills, and you are welcome to try out the machine in the club room (SOC1-03-19). What would SoC be without coffee, right?
Last, but one of the most exciting things, Jason Kim, an alumni who is starting his own company, has donated 5GB of web server space with SSH access to us. 5GB!! What marvels can we do with 5GB!! If you didn’t know, this is equivalent to a high-end shared hosting service… Hooray! Thank you very much, Jason! =)
