IVLE now welcomes Firefox

It seems that the ever increasing popularity of Firefox web browser has caught the attention of Center for Instructional Technology (CIT). As such, CIT has designed the next rollout of Integrated Virtual Learning Environment (IVLE) Version 8 to support Firefox, in addition to Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE).

CIT has collaborated with linuxNUS to recruit testers for functional testing of IVLE 8 in non MSIE browsers.

Testing will be carried out in 2 “phases”:

1. Bug Day #1: Everyone come together to do testing, ask questions etc

While (Time Permits)

2. Self - service testing day: Testers go back and test on their own remotely.

Each will be allocated a different section to test. After testing, users clock in their time spent and bugs found

3. Break: Testers take a break while developers do the necessary code changes to fix the bugs

Loop

The “Bug Day” will take place at Computer Centre PC Cluster, Computer Centre Building Level 3 on 24th May 2007, 10am to 5pm. The pay Rate: $7 per hour. Remote testing is at $6 per hour.

linuxNUS is proud to be part of this effort to support Firefox compatibility in IVLE 8.

Project Cube 2007

Misc, News No Comments

The objective of Project Cube is to refurbish unwanted PCs for donation to Moral Home for the Disabled and Muhammadiyah Welfare Home. This project is spearheaded by NUSSU CBLC with linuxNUS as a supporting organisation.

For this project, 20 PCs will be donated to the beneficiaries. 10 of the PCs run Zenwalk Linux 4.4. The other 10 run Microsoft Windows 98 and Free and Open Source Software such as Openoffice.org and Clam Antivirus.

Many thanks to James, Kheng Hui and Lu Feng from linuxNUS who have sacrificed much their free time to get Zenwalk installed and optimised for running 128MBram machines.

The trio have also written a supplement manual here, which will be printed out and given to the beneficiaries.

The handing over of the PCs will take place on the 9th and 10th of March.

We need HELP!!

Chatter, Misc, News No Comments

We are looking for people to help out in our events. Any kind of help is appreciated, from the biggies like being the person in charge of an event, or be a speaker on your pet topic, to easier stuff helping us publicise events (paste posters and send emails to the people you know). Right now, we are looking for help in the following areas. You don’t need to help with everything, just the part you are comfortable with.

  1. T-shirt:
    • sourcing for t-shirt deals
    • publicise the t-shirt sale (tell everyone you know!)
  2. Speakers:
    • we always need speakers for the monthly meetup. Do you have any thing to share with everyone? Need not be a formal presentation either, even a informal show and tell will do.
  3. FOSS Awareness Talk:
    • sourcing for appropriate speaker(s): Do you know anyone who might be willing to be one of the speakers? You can introduce him to us. =)
    • logistics and administrative preparation: Well, it’s the run-of-the-mill stuff like equipment (if needed), refreshments, registration of participants, etc
    • publicity: Design of posters, pasting them everywhere, and telling everyone you know
  4. coreteam:
    • Well, a lot of the people in the coreteam are in their final semester, so we will be severely short-handed soon. You can join the coreteam in any capacity (key personnel, publicity managers, logistics managers, or system administrators, etc).

If you are interested in helping out in any of these, or even things that are not mentioned, do email the join@linuxNUS.org. Or you can simply hop over to the room at SOC1-03-19. =) Hope to hear from you soon!

Happy New Year!!!

Events, News 3 Comments

It’s the second week of the new NUS semester, so HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! The coreteam has planned several events this semester, most of which are still in a planning stage. Just to pique your interest, here’s a sneak preview:

  • T-shirt: linuxNUS will have our own T-Shirt!!
  • XAMPP Introduction: Ever heard of XAMPP by apache friends? It’s a pre-packaged [Linux/Windows]AMP stack to install in your own computer!! It is not for use in production environments, but for developers to have a web server immediately. That way, they can get on with the thing they want to do: develop software. And we can wait for the fruits of their efforts. :p
  • Security Talk: We are inviting Eugene Teo to come down for a security talk. Likely topic is System Tap, and virtualization. He should be telling us about Linux Conference Australia 2007 too. Wohoo!
  • FOSS Awareness Talk for business students/startups: Capital issues plague startups all the time. NES and linuxNUS will be working together to introduce FOSS as a money saving alternative.
  • Career Networking Session: There are plans to hold one of these, but everything is still preliminary at this point.
  • Meetups, meetups, meetups!

Okay, enough about events for now. Do you know linuxNUS have our own cappuccino machine? Yup, you read it right! Rey and Junhao are still polishing their barista skills, and you are welcome to try out the machine in the club room (SOC1-03-19). What would SoC be without coffee, right?

Last, but one of the most exciting things, Jason Kim, an alumni who is starting his own company, has donated 5GB of web server space with SSH access to us. 5GB!! What marvels can we do with 5GB!! If you didn’t know, this is equivalent to a high-end shared hosting service… Hooray! Thank you very much, Jason! =)

Donation drive is a success!

In total we donated 60kg of rice, 2 big tins of Ovaltine, and 5 big boxes of cereals. Lu Feng has the receipt, so he should be posting the exact prices soon. =)

Food Donation to Sharity Gift Box on 20 Dec 06

Events, News No Comments

Hi everyone

Just read in today’s papers that the Sharity Gift Box is still short of food item donations for needy households. We would like to organise a shopping outing to buy food items (such as rice, milo, etc) and drop them off at Ngee Ann City Sharity Gift Box on 20 Dec 06. That will be the last day for donations.

For those who cannot make it on the day, you are most welcome to donate any amount of money and we will do the rest. Donations can be sent via interbank transfer to POSB/DBS/UOB/MayBank accounts (email us for bank account details). We will keep all receipts and records of donations received for the sake of accountability.

Let’s all do something meaningful and help the less fortunate this Christmas! If each of the 150 members in this list donates $10 (hardly enough for 2 fast-food meals), we will have $1500 to donate! That can buy us about 100 kilos of rice, or 150 tins of Milo!

All it takes from you is an email to contact @ linuxnus.org to register your interest to attend or donate! Include your contact number in the email. Do register your interest early because we have only 2 days left!

More details can be found at the Boys Brigade Sharity Gift Box

New Head of Marketing

News 2 Comments

Yoz! linuxNUS has a new Head of Marketing! Wee Biao aka Rey is coerced Lu Feng (Left) and Rey (Right) in our room into this by none other than Lu Feng, he has graciously accepted his role.

Although his exact duties are not fixed yet (we don’t really confine ourselves to our job scope anyway), his duties will most likely involve around publicising our events as well as marketing linuxNUS to likely sponsors.

Three cheers for Rey! Let’s give him all our support.

Linux documentation isn’t the easiest to find in NUS. And the helpdesk may only support *GASP* Win****.

Why depend on the helpdesk at all? Right here in NUS is the linuxNUS community.

You may have just installed Linux. Or maybe you have used Linux for eons. Or perhaps you just want to try your hand at installing Linux.

Come to the Linux Tweaks Workshop. Share your configurations and hacks, or pick up a tip or two from others.

All the sharing will be accumulated on Opensource@NUS portal.

Be part of this community event.

Be there.
